A new study has cleared coffee drinking for pregnant women, and that's a good thing.
A new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology has just provided some reassuring news to expecting mothers that coffee is actually just fine for an unborn child — which is a good thing, as coffee has fantastic health benefits that many people might not be aware of.
Coffee is known the world over for being a perfectly natural zero-calorie way to perk up in the morning, but some wondered if pregnant women who drank it were risking harming their child, resulting in a lower IQ or behavioral problems. But the study, which examined 2,197 pregnant women from 1959 and 1974, found that this is not the case at all.
So that means drink up, expecting mothers, because coffee can do you quite a bit of good.
For one thing, if you drink coffee regularly, you’re likely to increase your lifespan, according to an EcoWatch report, which notes that drinking four cups per day can reduce your risk of death by any cause by 16 percent, and cut your risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 21 percent. Considering the rates at which Americans suffer from cardiovascular ailments, that’s not a small figure.
And coffee has also been shown in scientific studies to reduce your risk of cancer, with the risk of prostate cancer recurrence in particular declining a whopping 59 percent for regular coffee drinkers, thanks to the antioxidants found in a good cup of joe.
If you’re looking to lose weight, reach for a cup of coffee, as research has shown that coffee is loaded with prebiotics that can improve your gut flora. And caffeine increases the rate of your metabolism, allowing you to burn off calories at a faster rate.
It can also help with brain ailments like Alzheimer’s down the road by reducing inflammation in your brain.
That’s just one of many of the benefits of coffee, so pregnant or not, don’t be afraid to pour yourself a cup.
