Aniston discusses women objectification and scrutiny
Jennifer Aniston, who rose to high-profile celebrity status during her time on the hit television series Friends, recently wrote a comprehensive piece for The Huffington Post. The 47-year-old actress talked about a variety of topics including the scrutiny that women generally go through.
After her lengthy post, husband Justin Theroux expressed how proud he was of her on Instagram. With a back and white picture of Aniston, he wrote, “#wcw Here’s just one reason why. #Gogirl.” The hastag “wcw” refers to “woman’s crush Wednesday.”
Aniston’s essay read, in part, “The objectification and scrutiny we put women through is absurd and disturbing. The way I am portrayed by the media is simply a reflection of how we see and portray women in general, measured against some warped standard of beauty. Sometimes cultural standards just need a different perspective so we can see them for what they really are – a collective acceptance … a subconscious agreement.”
Melissa McCarthy gave her thumbs-up and agreed “one hundred thousand billion percent” with Aniston’s views. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, McCarthy said, “Everybody needs to stop tearing down women. It’s always about the way we look – saying, ‘He’s very interesting,’ ‘He’s a good writer,’ ‘She’s looking older than she was last time we saw her.’ It’s a ridiculous thing. I just hope it gets to the point where it’s embarrassing for people to have such a shallow thought.”
Cheryl Fernandez-Versini gave Aniston praise on Twitter, sharing her essay and writing, “Just when I thought I couldn’t love her any more.” Olivia Wilde tweeted, “True words by Jennifer Aniston: “We use celebrity ‘news’ to perpetuate this dehumanizing view of females.”
Many other celebrities, female and male, raved about Aniston’s essay as she was speaking out for herself and for others.
