Paltrow: “I think we are better as friends than we were married”
Although Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin divorced in 2015, the two remain close friends for the sake of their children. The 43-year-old actress, singer and food writer said she is glad both her and Martin made the commitment to do whatever is best for their family. Apple is now 12, while Moses is 10.
Paltrow recently spoke on the BBC news show, HardTalk, saying: “It was a difficult time in our lives. We didn’t know that the ‘conscious uncoupling’ phrase was going to inspire so much conversation. At the time people said, these people are crazy and it’s true, but over time now I hear people saying thank you for showing there is another way. You can remain a family even though you are not a couple and make it a less traumatic experience for the children. It wasn’t my phrase, but I’m very proud of it.”
She continued: “As anybody who has been divorced knows, you have to put a lot aside to maintain the family and the practicalities of what that might mean and sometimes that’s quiet tough on a personal level. It’s a commitment I make every day to my children and their father even though we’re not in a romantic relationship.”
The actress also revealed that she feels her and Martin are better as friends, adding: “I think we are better as friends than we were [married]. We are very close and supportive of one another. It hasn’t always been easy for us because you have good days and bad days as you do in life with anything, but I feel lucky because Chris has been willing to push himself for the sake of the kids and help me co-create this new family. It’s like we are still a family, but not a couple.”
