Mariah Carey is baffled by the lyrics, believing to be misleading.
Nick Cannon’s new rap has Mariah Carey upset and confused, as she claims the two have always gotten along well.
Curiously titled Divorce Papers, the America’s Got Talent host released the song on Thursday and has evidently caught his former lover off guard. Cannon expressed strong opinions and talked about how he “can’t see [his] kids ’cause the government sucks.”
It was rumored that Cannon has refrained from signing the divorce papers, as his estranged wife would like to completely finalize the procedure and move on. However, sources have also suggested that the 35-year-old host is being manipulated by his lawyers as there are “no issues” between them.
The lyrics also state how “It’s been two years and I’m the one that’s been waiting.” Some speculate this is a reference to the divorce procedure. By the end of the track, the television personality says: “Man, f**k it. Let’s sign the papers.”
The artist and host has explained his side of the story, claiming he is merely venting frustrations about ongoing accusations and not necessarily referring to the relationship with his estranged wife.
“My purpose for creating this ‘Divorce Papers‘ freestyle was not to feed the tabloid chatter, or even to diffuse it. This was strictly a creative way for me to express my frustrations with the media, the naysayers, myself and ultimately with the voices in my head,” Cannon explained.
He continued: “As Father’s Day approaches this weekend, I’ve been reflecting quite a bit on my life as a father and how I want to be the best one I can be. My ex and I are in a great place and are diligently moving things along so we both can continue to be happy … I sincerely hope the media doesn’t once again try to manipulate my words or my purpose for releasing this song. As the world knows, I am an open book and I’m proud of that. When it comes to expressing myself, I take the fearless approach and that’s what I chose to do here.”
The rapper insisted that his lawyers are causing most of the friction.
