Netflix continues to expand its family-friendly efforts, this time with a new series for kids.
The popular streaming network nabbed Julie Andrews to star in a new half-hour show titled Julie’s Greenroom. Consisting of 13 episodes, the comedy features various puppets learning about the performing arts along with other educational segments. Managed by the Jim Henson Company, Julie’s Greenroom is set to debut in 2017.
The idea for the show came from Andrews and daughter Emma Walton Hamilton, as well as Judy Rothman-Rofe. The 80-year-old actress will also serve as executive producer.
“This project represents the fulfillment of a long held dream to educate children about the wonder of the arts. I am thrilled to be partnering with my daughter and long time coauthor, Emma, to bring this show to life along with our co-creator, Judy Rothman-Rofe. We could not be more honored to be working with the extraordinary Jim Henson Company. We are equally delighted to be premiering as a Netflix original production,” said Andrews in a statement.
Netflix’ Andy Yeatman also added, “It’s been an incredible treat to work with Julie on this project. This show is all about awakening children’s interest in the performing arts while introducing a new era of puppets to the viewers.”
Andrews will play the role of Ms. Julie, director of the Wellspring Center for the Performing Arts. She will run workshops in the theater and its greenroom along with assistant Gus (played by Giullian Yao Gioiello). The puppets, known as the Greenies, will conduct their own show throughout the season and incorporate music, dancing, improvisation, singing, and more.
Other family-friendly series on Netflix include All Hail King Julian, Turbo FAST, and Inspector Gadget.
