The star of the controversial movie urges naysayers to “find a friend.”
Ghostbusters’ Melissa McCarthy has not been bothered by the swarm of negative comments surrounding the 1980s film reboot.
The movie’s first trailer, which premiered in March, has received overwhelmingly more ‘thumbs-down’ votes than any other in YouTube history. To date, it has well over 830,000 thumbs down compared to fewer than 250,000 thumbs up.
McCarthy dismissed the online criticisms during a recent interview with The Guardian, adding, “All those comments — ‘You’re ruining my childhood!’ I mean, really.”
The criticism has spawned more bad publicity than the average reboot, some which include The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Ocean’s Eleven. Some attribute the negativity to the fact that the original cast is not in charge.
“Four women doing any movie on earth will destroy your childhood? I have a visual of those people not having a Ben,” said McCarthy in reference to husband Ben Falcone. She further added that the hatred was due to “not having friends, so they’re just sitting there and spewing hate into this fake world of the internet. I just hope they find a friend.”
Another trailer was recently released, though only on Facebook and Twitter for a brief period in an effort to combat more negativity on YouTube. Thanks to YouTube’s embedding feature, for example, bloggers and critics could add it to their websites to congregate some of the negativity on Sony’s official channel.
The movie has inadvertently shed some light on gender politics, which is a topic not many have addressed in Hollywood. Donald Trump added on Instagram last year, “Now they’re making Ghostbusters with only women. What’s going on?!”
The new film will be released July 15.
