The band joins a growing list of performers fighting against the controversial bill.
Grammy award-winning group Maroon 5 has effectively cancelled two concerts in North Carolina. The announcement comes on the heels of a long list of entertainers opting to back out in the state.
The group joined forces to protest the legislation known in North Carolina as “The bathroom law.” The controversial bill dictates which bathroom transgender people can use, a decision which North Carolina chose to prohibit.
Two dates were originally scheduled for the band to perform in North Carolina: Sept. 11 at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte and Sept. 12 at the PNC Arena in Raleigh. They join acts such as Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Jimmy Buffet, Pearl Jam and Demi Lovato, who all cancelled concerts earlier this year.
As many entertainers continue to protest, some music legends are getting slammed by conservative media outlets, such as RedState.com and The Federalist, writing and quoting, “To see whether Buffett allows restaurants that license the use of his name to “let stupidity or bigotry” determine their own bathroom policies, The Federalist contacted several restaurants that are part of the Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville restaurant chain, including every Margaritaville restaurant in Buffett’s home state of Florida. Although Buffett criticized North Carolina’s bathroom law, multiple Margaritaville restaurants also require patrons to use the bathrooms that correspond to their biological sex.”
While the controversy continues, Maroon 5 said on Friday that cancelling “is morally right as we feel everyone should be treated equally.” Fans of the band in the state may have to travel to see them perform as a result.
