A new study seeks to show the public the dangers of the artificial sweetener, consumption of which has been show to be linked to leukemia.
In an era of hyper health consciousness, it helps to know what is or isn’t safe to eat — even it’s hard to keep track of. While artificial sweeteners have always been controversial in terms of their benefits or hazards to people’s health, a recent study has confirmed that the artificial sweetener Splenda may contribute to serious health complications like cancer.
According to NBC, a study published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health has found that mice who were regularly fed the artificial sweetener had a higher chance of developing leukemia and other blood cancers than mice who did not have Splenda in their diet.
As a result of the study, the Center for Science in the Public Interest is now formally recommending that consumers avoid Splenda. This comes as a surprise, especially when considering that up until 2013 Splenda was on the list of foods that were considered by the organization to be totally safe.
However, it is worth noting that the rats in the study who were given a serving of sucralose, the primary ingredient in Splenda, were given an amount which winds up being the equivalent of ten cans of diet soda per day.
“And even if you consume less, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a problem,” says Lisa Lefferts, senior scientist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). “When something causes cancer at high doses, it generally causes cancer at lower doses, the risk in just smaller.”
The CSPI recommends that everybody stay completely away from Splenda, and any other artificial sweeteners containers sucralose.
Jan Darvas says
My best friend has leukemia and never put any form of artificial sweetener in her body her entire life. The best leukemia doctors in the world admit that no one knows what causes leukemia and that it most likely is genetic.
You have to love the phrase “has confirmed that the artificial sweetener Splenda MAY contribute to diseases such as cancer…..” Obviously, this study means nothing.
If they’d like to study a person who consumes a ton of Splenda, just give me a call. I consume about 2000 packets per year and have since it first came out. Before that, I consumed that much Equal and before that I consumed about as much of that “pink packaged stuff.” I’ve been doing this for over 40 years.. You people should put me into a study.
Also, as a person who just had a run in with her health care provider regarding the FDA’s determination that artificial hormones should not be used after age 65, I really have to laugh at all of this. The FDA is worried about me taking replacement hormones when they allow farmers to pump antibiotice and hormones into our meat and milk. Seriously? What hypocrites and corrupted people. So, where’s the FDA’s standing on Splenda? I can hardly wait to hear their response.
What a bogus study. Just like the sodium cyclamate study in the 1960’s. Bottom line……take your test results to the FDA and if you pay them enough, they’ll approve your questionable “findings.”
In a few years, there probably will be a study (if the study’s originators pay the FDA enough) saying that Splenda is fine for you. Look what they do with their never-ending studies regarding the effects of coffee.
Whoever funded the Splenda study got seriously ripped off.
