A century ago on March 14 ‘pi’ was found. This day is celebrated in the honour of this universally used mathematical constant. This is the first time since its inception that we get to celebrate the birth of ‘pi’ on the same date and day in line, as its birthday. This is a once-in-a-century opportunity and hence today is somewhat special for pi.
Today Is Special
At 9:27 am today, mathematicians celebrated this special ‘International Pi Day’ in bizarre manner. Pi expands to 3.1415927… and certainly it is the world’s beloved irrational number. In Greek, pi is represented as π, and it denotes the ratio of a circle’s circumference and diameter. It is this pi that helped the Egyptians build pyramids; it also played a crucial role in discovering “God’s particle”—Higgs’ Boson.
Fun With ‘Pi’
Centenary celebrations includes eating pies, composing “pi-kus” which are haikus with three syllables in the first line, four in Line 3 and one in Line 2. There are other activities like parading in circles, competing together in calculating or reaching pi, reciting the digits of pi till limits that people may remember, creating various ‘pi’ puns.
Pi’s Inception
Physicist Larry Shaw found this useful ‘pi’ on Saturday, March 14, 1988 at the grand San Francisco Exploratorium. Since March 2009, March 14 is celebrated in the US by all and sundry as National Pi Day.
With the advent of tech-savvy computer systems, headlines pertaining to cracking the head on digits have subsided. However, ‘pi’ is different and reaching quadrillion or more digits on expanding pi demands recognition, especially on this special day. Recently on record, trillions of digits relevant to pi have been put on personal computers, customized and custom built.
Pi has infinite randomness, awes with its mathematical brilliance, unleashes the universe’s complexity and showcases that the little numbers we handle daily can have very deep roots!
