The back peddling continues as NBC nightly news anchor, Brian Williams, has taken a leave of absence. The popular anchor has come under fire for lying about his exploits during combat flights with so, divers in the Middle East. The station says it had nothing to do with the decision and was something Williams decided to do on his own.
Secret Meetings
The groups have met earlier to discuss the situation and all parties’ state of all the topics discussed, Williams stepping down was not one of them. This comes as media has been reporting the network is conducting an extensive investigation. The executives stated that no investigation is underway. They claim they are only on a fact finding mission to have the information required to properly respond to questions. This insures they will not have to release an official report on the findings.
Many are criticizing NBC for not firing the anchor or at least reprimanding him. Williams recently signed a new $10 million a year contract and her might be some obvious reasons for not coming down hard on him. The most obvious being that they knew he was lying and that fact would come out if they fired him and he contested the firing.
Deja Vous
Williams will be on the David letterman show Thursday and that will be his opportunity to explain himself to a large audience. The funny thing is the first time he told the lie was on letterman’s show in 2003. It’s hard to read what NBC is planning to do with this situation. In the past they have fired employees but not immediately leading many to speculate the ax is still on the table.
The lie was his personal account of being in a helicopter that was stuck by enemy fire. Recently some of the troops, including the captain of the chopper, discredited Williams’s story.
