Recent reports suggests that the popular Swiss watchmaker, Swatch, reportedly working on a smartwatch to compete with upcoming Apple Watch. The most interesting thing about the Swatch smartwatch is that it will not require daily charging.
We’re not sure how the company will be able to pull off such a feat, but if it does work as expected, then Swatch could become a significant problem for Apple and other competitors.
Swatch has been in the business of making watches for the past 10-years. It’s first device is called SPOT, and it came to life due to a partnership with Microsoft at the time. SPOT, while not a smartwatch, was not a typical watch as it came with features normally not found in regular watches.
Along with the ability of not requiring a charge, Swatch CEO Nick Hayek also claim the company’s first foray into the smartwatch realm will have support for NFC. This gives us the impression that the device might not be a true smartwatch, and probably just a fitness tracker similar to the Microsoft Band.
We say this because a standard smartwatch from what we have seen, always tend to require daily recharging. So unless Swatch has come up with a cool new battery technology, then we have to be a skeptic about the battery life claim.
CEO Nick Hayek also pointed out that the name of the device is the Swatch Touch, and it will feature a water-resistant exterior. This isn’t new or exciting since the majority of smartwatches available on the market right now comes with a form of water-resistant surface for those moments in the rain.
We would love to see what Swatch has up its sleeve in the months to come and if it possesses the technology to compete with Apple and the other big players.
