Katy Perry releases Olympic Games-inspired song

Katy Perry just released her new song, Rise, which also serves as the anthem for this year’s summer Olympic games.

The 31-year-old singer introduced the song on the Today show by telling viewers it’s been in her for years. The song was accompanied with a video, which is essentially a compilation of past Olympic events.

Prior to playing it, she said, “This is a song that’s been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface. I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite.”

Perry also spoke about how the latest project coincides with the Olympics, adding, “I know that together we can rise above the fear – in our country, and around the world. I can’t think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be.”

Some of the lyrics in the song includes, “When the fire’s at my feet and the vultures all start circling, they’re whispering, you’re out of time … but still I rise.”

This comes shortly after the Unconditionally hitmaker made headlines as the most followed person on Twitter, along with retweeting what she wrote in May 2015, stating, “time, the ultimate truth teller” referring to the relationship between Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris.

Rise will be played throughout the Olympic games and will be part of the opening ceremony, scheduled for broadcast this August 5th on NBC.
