‘Chewbacca mom’ helps fuel ongoing ‘Star Wars’ craze

It’s been almost 40 years since the original Star Wars saga, but the franchise continues to excite fans old and new. The force can be especially felt online, as some Star Wars-themed YouTube videos have consistently garnered a substantial amount of hits each day.

After the undeniable success of cat videos, (some consisting of cats fighting with lightsabers), subsequently came the Boogie Storm, consisting of a group scene on Britain’s Got Talent. Over the weekend, the Star Wars-costumed team danced in the finale and, although they didn’t win, many were mesmerized by their talented moves while wearing such seemingly stiff outfits.

Another Star Wars sensation has come in the form of an average mom with a Chewbacca mask. Her trying on the mask in her car quickly gained over 140 million Facebook views and paved the way for internet celebrity status.

Candace Payne’s infectious laughter has been heard around the world. When asked by The Today Show how it made her feel, she said, “I was so excited to see so many people get joy in their feed! People that were struggling with depression and had lost hope, and some people that were just needing a pick me up — all the walks of life, laughing with me. Couldn’t be more grateful for the Internet webs!”

In fact, Mark Zuckerberg invited her to Facebook headquarters because her Facebook Live video broke the record for most views ever. Payne also had the chance to take James Corden to work, who was joined by J.J. Abrams, the director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
