Netflix is working with Spanish network Univision to produce a new drama based on the notorious Mexican drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
The project will be available to Netflix subscribers in the United States after first airing on UniMas in 2017. The streaming network will then release the series exclusively to the rest of the world.
“El Chapo is a great example of how Univision continues to innovate and evolve with premium storytelling formats. The IP we’ve developed from more than 50 years of award-winning news and investigations gives us unique and innovative ways to tell stories in a way no other network can,” Univision Communications Inc president Randy Falco stated. “We are pleased to deliver this groundbreaking series to audiences in the U.S. and around the world,” he continued.
“We are thrilled to partner with the award-winning Univision Story House on the timely and globally relevant drama series based on the life story of El Chapo,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said.
The series would follow a similar plot to #Cartel, another drama revolving around the drug kingpin at History.
After successfully breaking out of prison and evading authorities, El Chapo was captured earlier this year and swiftly made international headlines. A judge recently ruled in favor of extraditing the drug lord to the United States, where he is to face charges of racketeering, murder, among other serious offences. Another judge had previously ruled for the notorious criminal to be extradited to face trafficking-related charges in Los Angeles.
