Michael Phelps on new baby, struggles, and future plans

Without a doubt, Michael Phelps had a few years of highs and lows since breaking Olympic records. He is by far the most decorated athlete in Olympic history, holding the all-time record for most medals. After several arrests since age 19 for DUIs and substance abuse, Phelps has gradually lost several sponsorships and fans through the years.

Despite these challenges, another medal was awarded to the athlete on May 5, as he and fiancé Nicole Johnson welcomed a baby boy. He posted an Instagram picture with the caption, “Welcome Boomer Robert Phelps into the world!!! Born 5-5-2016 at 7:21 pm !!! Healthy and happy!!! Best feeling I have ever felt in my life!!!”

Moreover, the 30-year-old athlete recently spoke to Matt Lauer on Today regarding his road to return to the Olympics. Following a telling story of his struggles to get accepted in London, where he had won six medals, Phelps told Lauer he wasn’t sure about a continued career as a swimmer. After a 2014 arrest for DUI, Phelps checked himself into rehab after friends and family successfully convinced him. Although the athlete isn’t sure if he’s an alcoholic or has a more casual drinking problem, he realized that some life changes were necessary.

Over 45 days in rehab, Phelps now feels he’s a changed man and is preparing to compete in Rio. He hopes his fans see his performance as a humble and triumphant return.

“I finally gave 100 percent or I’m happy to turn the page to the next chapter. I’m happy to move on from my swimming career and go out how I wanted to,” Phelps stated.
