Nick Jonas and Demi Lovati, who are touring together, decided to boycott their two July concerts in North Carolina in protest of House Bill 2. Known as the “bathroom
Law,” the bill discriminates against transgender people using bathrooms that identify their newly chosen gender. It also bans lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) nondiscrimination laws in the state.
In a conversation with Marc Malkin of E! Entertainment, Jonas said, “It’s a tough thing and what makes it more tough is I have family in North Carolina and friends there. On top of the disappointment I’m sure some fans felt, I’ve got personal disappointment.”
Jonas joins a list of musical celebrities including Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Boston, who also cancelled their shows in protest. Other celebrities have also spoken out against the law. The boycotts and protests have some North Carolina lawmakers reconsidering the Bill, but many are unfazed.
The Future Now tour kicks off on June 24 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Fans that will miss Jonas and Lovati in Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina might have to travel a distance to catch them. These performances are also scheduled in surrounding states, including Atlanta, Georgia and Norfolk, Virginia.
Most recognized for his musical career with The Jonas Brothers, Nick moved onto a variety of solo projects over the years. He was discovered at the age of six and landed several big Broadway roles. The singer has also played a variety of characters on television and film. He landed his first leading role in film playing Doug Martin in Careful What You Wish For.
