Amazon Studios has acquired the North American rights to a new feature film by legendary producer Woody Allen. The studio will oversee its theatrical release and eventual online streaming, making it a big accomplishment as Sony Pictures Classics had typically managed the release of several previous films. Some of these include Blue Jasmine and Midnight in Paris.
The untitled movie was shot in 2015 throughout New York and Los Angeles. Considered a romantic comedy set in the 1930s, the project gathered many prominent actors such as Steve Carell, Blake Lively, Kristen Stewart, Corey Stoll, among others.
Amazon Studios is set to open the film during the summer with a nationwide theatrical release, followed by an online streaming version available to Prime members. A source has stated that the movie’s online availability will not deviate from the typical three-month theatrical showing window. In this case, Prime members will gain access to the movie faster than other streaming partners.
“Like all beginning relationships, there is much hope, mutual affection and genuine goodwill — the lawsuits come later,” Woody Allen stated. Amazon Studio’s Roy Price followed, “Woody Allen is a brilliant filmmaker. We’re so proud to be in business with him for both his next film and his first-ever TV series.”
Amazon is evidently gearing up to become a leading source within the film industry, having acquired seven Sundance titles among other projects in recent history. The most expensive purchase to date is Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, having cost the studio $10 million. The indie film was one of the best-reviewed projects at Sundance and had several other buyers interested.
In addition to the upcoming film, Amazon is also working with the famed director to write and manage a six-episode series starring himself, Miley Cyrus, and Elaine May.
