Nature photographer Nowicki captures the rarest natural sand towers formation

Nature photographer, Joshua Nowicki, has created a buzz all over the Internet with his recent pictures of sand towers etched by the wind. The photographer witnessed one of the nature’s most beautiful creations at the Silver Beach County Park in St. Joseph, Michigan. The sand towers were carved out along the shores of Lake Michigan during a fierce blizzard. As people grounded themselves down inside their houses due to the blizzard, nature took the serene opportunity to create its own masterpiece.

Nowicki, a resident of St. Joseph town, had made up plan to dine out with his wife on the Valentine’s Day. However, the blizzard destroyed their plans, and they ended up going to the Silver Beach County Park. It was here that the photographer discovered the otherworldly creation.

At the shoreline, small moulds were cast into bulbous, futuristic shapes by the strong winds. As Nowicki took a walk along the beach, he noticed the shapes and photographed them. The biggest of the formations was around one foot in height. The biggest patch covered around 30 square feet of area.

The towers were formed as the frozen layers of sand were exposed to the strong winds. The formations were similar to those of canyons that are carved by rivers. The wind worked on the cohesion of soil particles, causing them to break and then detached and moved them to give them the shapes.

However, the formations were too small to last long and melted away easily. Nowicki managed to take the pictures until it was dark. But the sand towers had dried out until morning, and in their place, only small piles of sand stayed.

Amidst the fascinating pictures of the sand formations, Nowicki also took a mesmerizing picture of a frozen lighthouse. The picture is now part of the city’s official website.
