Kashmir Floods: 120 killed, 10,000 stranded and 2600 villages displaced

Heavy rains in the region have resulted into widespread destruction causing heavy floods in the Kashmir valley that has killed 120 and 1000s are still stranded there.

On September 5, 2014 these horrendous floods took place destroying much life and property. 



Currently the Jhelum river is flowing much above the danger mark and has overflown several embankments in the Pulawa region. A red alert has been already issued after the airports were seen clogged with overflowing water.



The army has already been pressed into service as the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were shifted from Uttarakhand, while rescue army personnel in a boat fell latest victims to heavy floods in Pulwama district.and the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh rushed to take stock of the situation. 

The Union Minister has taken a full survey of the flood affected areas in SriNagar.





The schools in J&K have been closed until weekend but are expected to remain closed owing to heavy downpour that is expected in the next two days as well.

Vehicles are also stranded on the Jammu-Pathankot highway. There is a lot of unrest in the state and people are not sure of what is to be done. There has been immense loss to life and property. 



Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh for the family of those killed and Rs. 50,000 for the seriously injured.



Continuous rains for five days with a prediction of another 2 days has shown serious implications turning the situation into a natural disaster and calamity.

Though the army personnels have been successful in rescuing around 6,000 people the situation is still not under control. Until now 120 people have been reported dead while many others are injured and still stranded.
