A hacker group has successfully penetrated the security system of the Tesla Model S, activating a number of its electronic systems while the car was in motion.
Students from a Chinese university have successfully demonstrated how it is possible to hack into the Tesla Model S in such a way as to play around with the horn, the headlights, the sun roof and the doors while the vehicle is in motion. Far from just a bit of aimless fun, it was in fact all in the name of a Syscan conference competition, whereby a cool $10,000 was on the cards for anyone that could infiltrate the security system of the Tesla.
And while Tesla didn’t technically play any role in the competition nor lend its name to the event specifically, it did give the whole idea the nod of approval and insisted that any security flaws exposed would be investigated.
A team going by the name of ‘yo’ managed to work its way into the electronic control system of the Model S, which in turn allowed for activation of the car’s horn, headlights, windows and doors while the vehicle was being driven. No official details have yet been made public as to how they did it, but the competition’s sponsors have insisted that all necessary information will be written up and published in the near future.
