Twitter Confirms Record Breaking 672 Million World Cup Tweets – Facebook Notches 280m Posts

The World Cup social media war was something of a whitewash in favor of Twitter, with the company having confirmed an astonishing 672 million Tweets sent during the games.

Most of us knew from the first blow of the whistle that Germany would take home the World Cup, but there was another big winner that broke all manner of records rather more quietly in the background. Social media was always going to be a big part of the tournament’s festivities, but it seems Twitter was the platform of choice for most and managed to obliterate its own personal-bests.

Things are still going strong by way of post-tournament discussions and the like, but during the course of the World Cup finals alone it’s been reported that over 672 million Tweets were posted on the subject of the games.

“While this is the highest number we’ve announced related to an event, it’s hard to compare the 32-day, 64-match World Cup to, for example, the single-game Super Bowl, the one-night Oscars, or the 16-day Olympics,” read a recent post on Twitter’s official blog.

And it wasn’t the final between Germany and Argentine that sparked the most discussion either – the 32.1 million Tweets sent during the game were eclipsed by the 35.6 million sent while Germany was pasting Brazil 7-1.

In terms of individual players, Newmar chalked up the most mentions of all though was followed pretty closely by Suarez and Messi.

As for Facebook, Twitter’s rival managed to accrue in the region of 280 million posts and related interactions during the World Cup finals, which likewise was and is a new personal best for the social network.
