Sony has lifted the lid on PS4 sales performance to reveal that an impressive 2.1 million consoles have been sold around the world in its first two weeks on the market.
CEO of Sony Group Entertainment called the console’s passing of the two million sales barrier an “impressive and record-setting accomplishment” that would not have possible without the ongoing support and dedication of PlayStation fans the world over.
“The best part: the PS4 journey has just begun,” read House’s blog post.
“In addition to an incredible lineup of PS4 games from the best developers in the world, we will continue to introduce valuable new features and services to PS4 in the months and years ahead.”
Sony has from the beginning of the PS4’s campaign been forthcoming of its eagerness to surpass sales of the PS3 and set an all-new benchmark for the industry as a whole. The next target for the PS4 is to go beyond the five million unit sales mark by the end of Q1 next year – a goal that’s likely to be reached much sooner if current pace continues.
Meanwhile, the Xbox One from Microsoft will soon have complete its own two-week opening stint on the shelves and so far no sales statistics have been offered by Redmond. As such, the attention of the industry will be squarely on Microsoft over the coming days to see which of the two next-generation consoles has taken an early lead – the PS4 is however the front-runner in the minds of most.
That being said, the PS4 was apparently outsold by the Xbox One over the Black Friday weekend, though this is yet to be officially backed by any stats or evidence.
